Kent’s byway network includes 419 BOATs (Byways Open to All Traffic), the strongest legal designation for motor vehicles, 35 Unclassified County Roads, 465 restricted byways kept on the map for reference even though they’re not open to motorcycles.
Of the 344 lanes with a recorded surface, 61% are unsurfaced, grass, gravel, ground or dirt tracks rather than tarmac. The longest named legal lane we've mapped here is Scotland Common, running 2.6 km.

This page is a snapshot, not a live feed. Lanes get closed or restricted over time, a seasonal condition, an active Traffic Regulation Order, storm damage, and this static page can't show that changing picture, so we're not going to guess at a number here that could already be wrong by the time you read it.

Difficulty in Kent is mostly still provisional. We haven’t fully graded any of the county’s 919 lanes ourselves yet; most of the rest carry an estimated difficulty pulled from OS trail-condition tags rather than a real assessment, and we've flagged those clearly on the map rather than pretend they're checked. We're working through the county ourselves, lane by lane, so if you spot a bike wearing a Holloway sticker out grading, give us a wave. If you've ridden a Kent byway yourself, suggesting a grade from the lane's own detail card is the single most useful thing you can do for the next rider.
It's legal on lanes with the right designation, mainly BOATs and UCRs. Restricted byways, bridleways and footpaths are not open to motor vehicles. Legal status can also change at short notice through a Traffic Regulation Order, so it's worth checking a lane's current status before you ride, not just its designation on a map.
A Byway Open to All Traffic carries a full right of way for motor vehicles. A bridleway is for walkers, cyclists and horse riders only, no motor vehicles at all. Kent's network includes both, and it matters which one you're on before you ride it.
