Greater London · England
Yes, there's real trail riding near you. We've mapped 127 lanes and byways across Greater London, real BOATs and UCRs you can ride today, not just tracks that look tempting. Browse the map, see what's open to motorcycles, and check current closures, free.
*Based on each lane's recorded designation. Legal status can change, always check a lane's current status yourself before riding.
Greater London’s byway network includes 83 BOATs (Byways Open to All Traffic), the strongest legal designation for motor vehicles, 16 Unclassified County Roads, 27 restricted byways kept on the map for reference even though they’re not open to motorcycles. There is also 1 paved single-track lane mapped in the county, hedge-lined B-roads rather than off-road byways, off the map by default since they’re a different kind of riding, not a rights-of-way question.
Of the 53 lanes with a recorded surface, 49% are unsurfaced, grass, gravel, ground or dirt tracks rather than tarmac. The longest named legal lane we've mapped here is Chelsfield Lane, running 1.4 km.
Some named byways currently open in the county include:
Shown as currently open at time of writing, not a permanent guarantee, legal status changes. Always check signage and current Traffic Regulation Orders before riding, this page is reference material, not a substitute for checking on the day.
This page is a snapshot, not a live feed. Lanes get closed or restricted over time, a seasonal condition, an active Traffic Regulation Order, storm damage, and this static page can't show that changing picture, so we're not going to guess at a number here that could already be wrong by the time you read it.
The Holloway app itself tracks this properly: where we know about a closure, it's shown directly on that lane's own detail card. And every lane also has its own one-tap Legal Status Search, a direct, pre-filled search for that specific lane's current legal status, so you're never stuck relying only on what we happen to already know. Always check a lane's current status yourself before riding.
Difficulty in Greater London is mostly still provisional. We’ve fully graded 1 of the county’s 127 lanes ourselves so far, riding them and rating them by hand; most of the rest carry an estimated difficulty pulled from OS trail-condition tags rather than a real assessment, and we've flagged those clearly on the map rather than pretend they're checked. We're working through the county ourselves, lane by lane, so if you spot a bike wearing a Holloway sticker out grading, give us a wave. If you've ridden a Greater London byway yourself, suggesting a grade from the lane's own detail card is the single most useful thing you can do for the next rider.
It's legal on lanes with the right designation, mainly BOATs and UCRs. Restricted byways, bridleways and footpaths are not open to motor vehicles. Legal status can also change at short notice through a Traffic Regulation Order, so it's worth checking a lane's current status before you ride, not just its designation on a map.
A Byway Open to All Traffic carries a full right of way for motor vehicles. A bridleway is for walkers, cyclists and horse riders only, no motor vehicles at all. Greater London's network includes both, and it matters which one you're on before you ride it.
Probably, at any given time, usually a seasonal restriction or a Traffic Regulation Order following surface damage, but this page can't tell you which ones right now. The app flags closure status on the map and on each lane's own detail card where we know about one, and every lane has its own Legal Status Search so you can check for yourself in seconds.
