Every rider keeps some kind of tally. The lanes you've done, the ones you keep meaning to get to, the county you've never ridden. Holloway now keeps that tally for you, and turns it into something worth chasing: seven ranks, 36 badges and a map of England and Wales that fills in as you ride.
It all runs off one thing you may already do: marking a lane as ridden. Nothing to set up, nothing to pay for.
How it works
Open any lane on Holloway and tap Mark as ridden, or log a whole day with Start ride and Finish ride in Navigate lane by lane. Each lane you log earns points, and the points build your rank. Hit a milestone and a card pops up on the map to tell you what you've earned.

Seven ranks, from Newcomer to Holloway
Each rank is named after something you'll find on the lanes themselves. Everyone starts as a Newcomer. A Drover has a few dozen lanes behind them. A Holloway, named after the old sunken lanes worn deep by centuries of travel, is someone who's ridden a serious slice of the country.

Points come from riding and from helping the map:
- 10 points for each lane you ride for the first time
- 50 points for your first lane in a new county
- 500 points for riding every open lane in a national park
- 25 points for each difficulty grade a moderator accepts
- 40 points for each closure or TRO report that checks out
- 60 points for each missing lane you trace that gets approved
- 15 points for each lane video that gets approved
- 5 points for sharing a ride card, once a day
Notice where the big numbers are. Helping the map is worth more than riding the same lanes again, because every accurate grade or closure report makes Holloway better for the next rider.
36 badges in four families
The badges are split into four groups, so you can see at a glance what kind of rider you are.

Milestones count the lanes you've ridden, from First Tracks for your very first lane, through Gate Opener, Hedge Runner and The Ton, all the way to Thousand Lanes. Almost nobody will get that last one, and that's the point.
Explorer badges are about where you've been. County Line and Across the Shires for riding in 3 and then 10 counties. Border Crosser for lanes in both England and Wales. Legionary for five Roman roads, Ancient Ways for the Ridgeway, Icknield Way and Harrow Way, Wet Feet for ten lanes with a ford, and Long Haul for a single lane over 10km, like Rudland Rigg. There's even a Namesake badge for riding a lane that's actually called Holloway.

Giving back badges reward the riders who make the map better: Grader and Master Grader for difficulty grades a moderator accepts, Lane Guardian for closure and TRO reports that check out, Scout for tracing a missing lane, and On Film for adding a video of a lane. Founding Rider goes to everyone who joined Holloway in 2026.
Repeatable and seasonal badges come round again, which brings us to the next bit.
Some badges come round again
A badge you can only win once stops being interesting the moment you've got it. So a handful of them keep going, and the badge shows how many times you've earned it, like ×3.
- Monthly Challenge: a new challenge every month, like riding three lanes you haven't ridden before, or a lane in a county that's new to you.
- Year Rider: 25 lanes in a calendar year. A new one each year, named for the year.
- Four Seasons: a lane in every season of the same year.
- Longest Day and New Year's Lane: a lane in the week of the summer solstice, and one in the first week of January.
- Park Complete: every open lane in a national park, earned once for each park.
- Lane Guardian, Scout and On Film: one for every closure report, missing lane or video that's approved.
Your own completion map
This is the bit we're proudest of. My Holloway now draws England and Wales as a grid of squares, each about 9km across. Squares with legal lanes are shaded, and every square where you've ridden a lane turns dark. Over a season, you can watch your patch of the map fill in, and see the gaps you've never been near.

Next to the map you get a ring for every national park and a bar for each county you've ridden, showing how many of its open lanes you've done. Finish every open lane in the Peak District, or Dartmoor, or the Yorkshire Dales, and that's Park Complete.
Built to reward the right kind of riding
Gamifying green lanes only works if it never pushes anyone to ride somewhere they shouldn't. So the rules are strict, and they're the same for everyone:
- Only open lanes count. A lane that was closed, or inside its seasonal closure, when you logged it earns nothing. No badge will ever reward riding a closed lane.
- Military ranges and tidal crossings never count. Lanes like the Broomway or the Salisbury Plain range roads can be ridden where the law allows, but they'll never earn points, because nothing should encourage anyone onto them.
- A lane is a lane. Rudland Rigg is eight sections on the map but one lane on the ground, so it counts once.
- No cramming. Only 30 new lanes count in a single day, so ticking off every lane you've ever heard of from the sofa doesn't pay.
- Giving-back badges are checked. They only count once a moderator has approved your grade, report, lane or video, and they're counted by our server, not your phone.

Yes. Ranks, badges and the completion map work on any free Holloway account. You don't need Holloway Premium for any of it. If you've already been marking lanes as ridden, your history counts, so you might find a few badges waiting for you the first time you look.
